Home for the holidays: 5 personal robots we love

    November 30, 2015

Beloved in film and widely deployed in manufacturing industries and other areas to handle repetitive and dangerous tasks, robots have been reluctantly invited by humans into their homes and personal lives. But that’s beginning to change, and 2015 has seen a decided shift in people’s attitudes as more and more of us warm up to the idea of the personal service robot, especially for handling some of life’s most dreary and essential task.

Real People – Not Real Publicity – Produce Buzz, Sales

      By Andy Marken | November 29, 2015

Real People – Not Real Publicity – Produce Buzz, SalesRecently I read a piece in Ad Age that said all of Coca-Cola’s social media buzz efforts didn’t help sales … zip, zero, nada. O.K., not quite that bad. It rang up a fantastic 0.01% short-term sales effect.

That isn’t enough to even move the needle! Someone else in the organization came to social media publicity’s defense and said that’s not exactly true; it just did something “different.”

Different is nice, but the boss (and shareholders) like sales to keep the wheels of commerce moving.

Nissan unveils IDS autonomous driving concept car at Tokyo Motor

Since the 1970’s Japan has been a world leader in factory automation, most notably in the use of robotics manufacturing for automobile production. But when it comes to leadership in the driverless automobile market, not so much. But that’s about to change, based on the technology roadmap to Japan’s ‘driverless car’ initiatives that emerged from the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

Balance sheets: a snapshot of your financial condition

          Part 1, The Basics

          By David Meister | November 21, 2015

Balance sheets: a snapshot of your financial condition

Last time I talked about cash flow.

Now, I’d like to discuss the balance sheet. So named because of two things: it shows the “balances” of all assets, liabilities, and equity accounts at a particular point in time (key concept), and because the asset side must balance (i.e. be equal to) the liability and equity side.

          So, some definition of terms.

Assets: Things of value that you own, or have a right to use

Liability: Things you owe; you will be paying to someone at some time in the future (“I owe, I owe, so off to work I go…”) Anyway, I digress.

Deadline for new power supply efficiency approaches

DoE's Level VI regulations due to go into effect

If you are building or planning to ship an electronic product next year that uses an external AC-DC power supply – the kind used with laptops, mobile phones, and industrial products– you will need to follow new power efficiency regulations for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that take effect February 10, 2016.

New Department of Energy specifications call for greater energy efficiency from low-power, standard-voltage or low-voltage units.
