        While Google, Apple and U.S. auto giants jockey for position in the connected automobile market of the future, China’s domestic suppliers are hardly standing still.

        This week the Chinese car brand Cowin Auto disclosed plans to develop smart and connected passenger vehicles with smartphone maker Xiaomi and internet search giant Baidu, according to published reports in the China press.Cowin’s disclosure of plans to build a connected car comes hot on the heels of an announcement by e-commerce giant Alibaba that it has signed a strategic alliance with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation to launch a car with an internet-connected mobile smart ecosystem within the next three years.

            Inside and outside the open source hardware community it is still early days, especially for the development of universally available open hardware to support electronics systems development. But thanks to the concerted, dedicated efforts of a small but growing association, the open source hardware movement is ploughing headlong into the future.

            The association, called, OSHWA, has been around long enough to have had four summits, all of them held at venues in the U.S.
